Sri Lanka has welcomed more than 1.5 million international visitors so far in 2026, underlining the steady recovery of an industry central to the island’s economy. Arrivals reached roughly 1.51 million between January and late August.
India remained the largest source market with just over 380,000 arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom and China. August alone brought nearly 174,000 tourists.
To meet its annual target of 2.7 million visitors, Sri Lanka needs close to 1.18 million more arrivals across the final four months, an ambitious pace officials say is achievable.
Encouragingly, tourism revenue has outpaced visitor numbers, with the country targeting about $4.2 billion for the year, up from nearly $3.2 billion in 2025.
For Gulf travellers, who make up a growing share of Sri Lanka’s arrivals, the island’s blend of beaches, heritage and wildlife continues to anchor its appeal.
