Riffa has grown into one of Bahrain’s largest and busiest areas, and its expansion tracks how the island’s development has spread out from Manama. Housing, retail, and services have followed the people moving there.
That growth brings the familiar demands of any expanding city. Roads, schools, and amenities have to keep pace with residents, and planning for that is an ongoing challenge for a densely populated country.
Riffa’s mix of established neighbourhoods and newer development gives it a particular character. It is neither the historic core nor a blank slate, which shapes how it grows.
For Bahrain, cities like Riffa are where much of daily life actually happens. How well they are managed says more about the country’s trajectory than the landmark projects that get more attention.
