Waymo Publicly Challenges Tesla’s Camera-Only Approach to Self-Driving

Waymo has publicly challenged the camera-only philosophy at the heart of Tesla’s self-driving ambitions, arguing that vision alone cannot reliably support fully autonomous driving at scale. The intervention sharpens a long-running technical disagreement into an open dispute between two of the industry’s biggest names.

Drawing on more than 200 million fully autonomous miles, Waymo contends that dependable driverless operation requires redundant perception, combining cameras with lidar and radar so the system can still see when one sensor is compromised. Cameras alone, it argues, leave too little margin for error.

The disagreement carries immediate commercial stakes. Tesla is preparing a wider rollout of its Cybercab, betting that cameras and software can match or beat more expensive sensor stacks, while Waymo already runs fully driverless services across several US cities using its multi-sensor approach.

The two companies represent competing bets on how autonomy will be achieved. Tesla’s approach promises lower hardware costs and easier scaling if it works; Waymo’s promises reliability through redundancy, at a higher price per vehicle.

Regulators may ultimately decide which philosophy prevails. Proposed requirements in states such as New Jersey could set standards for the sensors and safety cases that autonomous vehicles must meet, tilting the field toward one approach or the other.

For now, the public clash underlines how unsettled the technology remains even after years of development. Two well-funded leaders are still pursuing fundamentally different paths, and the question of which is right will be answered on the road rather than in a press release.
